Hynes (John B. Jr. “Jack”) is born in Dorchester.

The son of future mayor John and Marion (Barry) Hynes, Jack Hynes grows up at 31 Druid Street, graduates from Boston College High School and Notre Dame University, and serves in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He begins his career in journalism at WNDU in South Bend, Indiana, returns to Boston to work at WBZ Radio, marries Marie Kelly and moves to Hingham. Hynes becomes evening news anchor at WHDH in 1959, at WCVB in 1972, and WLVI in 1984. Subsequently called the “Dean of Boston TV News,” he is known for his knowledge of the city and seriousness before the camera. Hynes retires in 2006, and dies in Hingham on February 13, 2018.
