Haynes (Michael E.) is born in Roxbury.

The son of Barbadian immigrants Gus and Edna Haynes, Michael Haynes grows up on Haskins Street, graduates from the New England School of Theology and Shelton College, and becomes youth minister at the Twelfth Baptist Church in 1951. He becomes a friend of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rev. Billy Graham, serves as senior minister at Twelfth Baptist (1964-2004), in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1965-69), and on the Massachusetts Parole Board (1965-85). Rev. Arthur Gerald Jr. later says of Haynes, “He has touched innumerable lives as a person of God and ministry, as a community leader, and community worker.” Haynes dies in Roxbury on September 12, 2019, and is buried at Forest Hills Cemetery.
