Statler Hotel and Office Building open.
March 10, 1927
Architect: George B. Post & Sons. (15) Originally the Statler and then the Statler Hilton Hotel, it is located at 50 Park Plaza (64 Arlington Street). The second tallest building in Boston at the time and the largest hotel in New England and eighth largest in the world at the time, it is the first hotel in the U.S. to provide radios in every room, and the first with in-suite bathrooms and telephones in Boston. Guests include most U.S. presidents from this time forward, as well as Muhammad Ali, Fidel Castro, Winston Churchill, Bette Davis, Judy Garland, and John Wayne, and, as a union hotel, it is the site of countless political events. Purchased by the Saunders family in 1976, it reopens as the Park Plaza Hotel and Towers on January 6, 1977. It is purchased by Sunstone Hotels in 2013.
