Cobb (Henry) is born in Boston.
April 8, 1926
The son of Charles and Elsie (Nichols) Cobb, Henry Cobb grows up in Brookline, graduates from Harvard College and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and serves in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Returning to Boston, he forms a partnership with I.M. Pei, his former teacher, in 1955, and soon after relocates to New York City, subsequently writing, “[Boston] seemed to me full, self-satisfied, and deeply resistant to change.” Cobb marries Joan Spaulding. He goes on to embrace the Modernist style and design several landmark buildings in Boston, prompting his father to complain to him, “Harry, you’ve taken away my Boston.” Cobb dies in New York City on March 3, 2020.
