Haynes (Roy) is born in Roxbury.

The son of Barbadian immigrants Gus and Edna Haynes, Roy Haynes grows up on Haskins Street, attends the Timilty Middle School, and Boston Conservatory of Music, and begins playing with Sabby Lewis and other local bands. He moves to Harlem in 1945, marries Lee Nevilles in 1958, and goes on to play bebop and other forms of jazz with bands led by Gary Burton, John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker. French critic Alain Gerber subsequently writes, “All the great drummers have invented something. Roy Haynes invented Roy Haynes, a bottomless treasure, the ‘sound of surprise’ made man.” Haynes dies on Long Island November 12, 2024.
