Wein (George) is born in Lynn.

George Wein grows up in Newton, serves in the U.S. Army in World War II, attends Boston University, and studies piano with Margaret Chaloff in Boston and Teddy Wilson at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. Wein begins to play professionally with his own band in and around Boston in 1948, and opens a jazz club in Boston in 1950,* and writes a music column for the Boston Herald-Traveler. He marries Joyce Alexnder in 1959 goes on to become a noted music promoter at festivals in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1954* and 1959,* and then in Boston, New York, and around the world, and “expanded the audience for jazz more than any other promoter in the music’s history,” according to Nat Hentoff. Wein dies in New York City on September 13, 2021.
