MBTA Blue Line begins service.

April 21, 1924

Operated initially by the Boston Elevated Railway Company, the newly-electrified subway line runs from Bowdoin Square through the new East Boston subway tunnel to Maverick Square. The line is extended to Airport, Wood Island (originally Day Square) and Orient Heights in 1952,* and to Beachmont, Revere Beach, and Wonderland stations in Revere in phases from 1952 until on January 19, 1954.
