St. Cyprian’s Church (first) is dedicated.
February 10, 1924
Originally St. Cyprian’s Mission, it is located at 1073 Tremont Street. Made up initially made up of immigrants from the West Indies, the congregation was established in May 1910. It met initially at 218 Northampton Street, then at the Franklin Union, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. The congregation moved to the Church of the Ascension in 1917, but decided to construct its own church when their hosts felt compelled to fumigate the building every Sunday after the African-American worshippers left. Rev. J.M. Matthias is the first minister. One of the features of their new church building is a series of 12 stained glass windows depicting important people and moments in African-American history.
