Worthy (William Jr.) is born in the South End.

The son of Dr. William and Mabel (Posey) Worthy, William Worthy grows up at 239 Northampton Street, graduates from Boston Latin School and Bates College, and becomes a CBS news correspondent and reporter for the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper. Described by some as a “radical journalist,” he defies U.S. travel restrictions to visit China and Cuba, becomes the subject of a folk song in 1964,* and visits Iran in the 1980s.* Worthy goes on to teach at the Boston University School of Journalism, University of Massachusetts Boston, and Howard University. He dies in Brewster on May 4, 2014.
