South Boston Army Base opens.

April 30, 1919

(Spring) Built by the US Army as a troop disembarkation facility supply depot, it is located at today’s 21 – 25 Drydock Avenue. The complex contains 2 million square of warehouse space and includes and administration building and power plant. Some 50,000 troops arrive here from World War I, including those on the SS Magnolia, which docks here on June 9, 1919. The nearby South Boston Naval Annex opens soon after. The Army base employs some 50,000 workers during World War II. It becomes part of the adjacent Navy base on June 30, 1970 and closes in 1974. The property is by the city and reopens as an industrial park in 1977.*
