Blinstrub’s Village opens.

1917

Originally the Belgian Village, it is operated by Stanley Blinstrub and located at 308 West Broadway. Expanded over the years, the restaurant introduces live entertainment in 1952 and its 1,700 seat nightclub is reputed to be the largest in the U.S. at this time. Performers include Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Jimmy Durante, Dean Martin, the McGuire Sisters, Wayne Newton, and Patti Page. According to John Henry Cutler, Blinstrub “[Only books performers] that a priest taking his mother out for dinner could see and hear.” The nightclub is destroyed by a fire in 1968.*
