Snowden (Muriel Sutherland) is born in Orange, New Jersey.

The daughter of William and Reiter (Thomas) Snowden, Muriel Snowden initially comes to the Boston area to attend Radcliff College , goes on to graduate from the New School of Social Work in New York City, and returns to Boston in 1934 after marrying Otto Snowden. She helps found Freedom House in 1949,* and becomes one of the foremost leaders in Boston’s black community. Snowden dies in Boston on September 30, 1988.
