Curley (James Michael) House construction begins.
March 17, 1915
Architect: Joseph Maginnis. Designed in the Georgian Revival style, it is located at 350 Jamaicaway. The 21-room mansion includes a main stairwell, dining room, and many fixtures salvaged from the Henry H. Rogers house in Fairhaven, as well as shutters with shamrock cut-outs, meant to signal Irish pride. Visitors to the home would include Chiang Kai-shek, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, who reputedly tap dances down its circular stairway. Its interior is recreated in Hollywood for the movie version of The Last Hurrah. The house is purchased by the Oblate Fathers in August 1956, by the city in 1988, and becomes headquarters of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy in 2021.
