Elephants are obtained for the Franklin Park Zoo.
June 7, 1914
Boston Post raises funds to buy the three elephants – Molly, Waddy, and Tony – and presents them to Gov. David Walsh, Mayor James Michael Curley, and a crowd of some 50,000 people at Fenway Park. They were purchased with $6,700 donated by more than 70,000 Boston-area children to the campaign orchestrated by the newspaper. A reenactment of the festivities is held in 2016.*
