Curley, James Michael. Campaign speech.
January 11, 1914
James Michael Curley delivers a campaign speech at a rally in front of St. Augustine’s Church. In what biographer Jack Beatty later calls “the single most recounted” story of his career, Curley begins by reciting the Lord’s Prayer – then interrupts the prayer when he notices a would-be thief reaching into his car. “Give us this day, our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses . . .,” Curley says, then shouts, “Get that sonuvabitch, he’s stealing my coat!” before resuming,”. . . as we forgive those who trespass against us. . .”
