O’Neill (Thomas P. “Tip”) is born in Cambridge.

Tip O’Neill grew graduates from Boston College, and works initially as an insurance agent and realtor. He serves in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1936-52), is elected speaker in 1949.* then serves in the U.S. House of Representatives (1953-87) and is elected speaker in 1977.* Known for his gregarious nature, and his ability to work with members of both parties and provide for his district and state, he is famous for the quotation “All politics is local.” O’Neill dies in Boston on January 5, 1994, and is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Harwichport.
