Fenway Park opens.

April 20, 1912

Architect: James McLaughlin. The wood-frame, single-deck ballpark is located at today’s 4 Jersey Street. The Red Sox beat the New York Yankees (then Highlanders) 7-6 in 11 innings before 27,000 fans. Ground was broken for the park on September 25, 1911 and it features the first screen behind home plate to catch foul balls in the U.S. The park is dedicated on May 16, 1912, with Mayor John F. Fitzgerald throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. The left field wall is raised to its present 37.2-foot height in 1917. The park is substantially rebuilt by Osborn Engineering Company in 1934,* and by Janet Marie Smith in 1983 and 1988.
