Washington Street subway tunnel opens.

Previously, the Main Line Elevated utilized the Tremont Street subway tunnel in downtown Boston. Construction began on October 6, 1904. New stops on the line include today’s State, Downtown Crossing (originally Summer Street and Winter Street, then Washington Street on January 23, 1967, then Downtown Crossing on May 4, 1987), Chinatown (originally Essex), and South Cove.
