John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company Building (first) is built.

Architect: Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge. It is located on Franklin Street (186 – 200 Devonshire Street). A new headquarters building opens in 1923,* and this building is demolished to make way for construction of the Shawmut Bank building in 1966.
