Graves Light begins operation.

September 1, 1905

Sometimes called The Graves, it is named for Thomas Graves, vice admiral of the Massachusetts Bay Company fleet, built from Rockport granite, and located on Graves Ledge, the outermost island in Boston Harbor, beyond municipal jurisdiction. The 113-foot lighthouse is the tallest in Boston Harbor and employs a 9-foot diameter Fresnel lens that is the brightest in Massachusetts. It is the setting for a dramatic scene in the 1947 film Portrait of Jennie. Originally owned by the federal government, the property is purchased by a private owner, David Waller, in 2013, but the light is still operated by the U.S. Coast Guard.
