Boston Police Department obtains its first automobile.

(July) The first police patrol car in the U.S., it is a Stanley Steamer, built in Newton, and driven by a chauffeur. A uniformed police officer rides in a back seat that is raised up “to allow him to look over the back fences.” By 1906, the department owns five autombobiles. It acquires its first patrol wagon in 1912. Cars are equipped with one-way radios in 1934 and two-way radios in 1936.
