It is the fifth most populous of any city in the U.S. (behind New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and St. Louis). 12,809 are described as “Colored (Negro, Chinese, Japanese, Indian), including 11,591 who are African-American. 197,129 (35.1%) are foreign born; 70,147 from Ireland, 47,374 from English Canada, 14,995 from Russia, and 13,738 from Italy. An estimated 40,000 are Jewish. The separate town of Hyde Park has an additional population of 13,244, with 128 classified as “Colored,” including 116 classified as “Negro;” 3,805 as foreign born.
