Hotel Somerset opens.
February 3, 1897
[3/1/1899-BBH, 1910-BGL] Architect: Arthur Bowditch. It is located at 416 Commonwealth Avenue. It is described by the Boston Globe as “Among the distinctively magnificent hotels of the world.” Guests include The Beatles and Ted Williams. An annex adds 50 rooms to the hotel in 1901. Used by naval sailors studying at the Wentworth Institute Naval Training School from 1942 to 1945, the hotel takes over the adjacent Hotel Puritan in 1952. The expanded hotel closes on March 31, 1972 [May 30, 1972] and the building is converted to apartments in 1972* and into condominiums in 1983.
