Gov. William Russell dies suddenly at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

The 39-year-old, four-time governor had been mentioned as a vice-presidential or future presidential candidate. In a signed editorial in the Boston Globe, publisher Charles Taylor describes him as a “candidate without a flaw . . . if ever there was a favorite son of a State, Governor Russell was the man. None knew him but to love him.”
