Boston Elevated Railway Company is established.
July 2, 1894
Massachusetts legislature passes Chapter 548, creating the for-profit company to build and operate a proposed elevated transit system. The action comes after the existing West End Railway Company proves unable to raise the capital needed to do so. BERy’s headquarters are subsequently located at 250 Franklin Street. It takes possession of the West End Railway properties in 1897*, and subsequently becomes the largest public transit systems in New England and one of the largest in the world.
