Boston Terrier is enrolled on the American Kennel Club’s official stud list.

1893

The breed began sometime after 1865 with a dog named “Judge,” a cross between an English bulldog and a white English Terrier. The first American-bred dog, it is adopted as the mascot of Boston University in 1922 and the official state dog of Massachusetts. The B.U. mascot is subsequently named “Rhett” after the character in the movie Gone With the wind. A move is currently underway to change the name because of its association with the Confederacy.
