Golf is first played in Boston.

December 12, 1890

The first round of golf is played on a makeshift 10-hole course laid out by J. Bartholomew Smith at Franklin Park. The foursome is made up of Temple Craig, Samuel MacDonald, Boston Globe tennis writer Frederick Mansfield, and George Wright. The introduction of golf to the park is not welcomed by the Olmsted architectural landscaping firm when a formal course opens in 1896.*
