John F. Fitzgerald is elected to the Boston Common Council.
December 9, 1890
Fitzgerald (D) defeats Joseph O’Neill to win his first public office. Called by Mark Schneider, “The most energetic campaigner the city had ever seen,” he beats a candidate backed by Patrick Maguire. “Honey Fitz” soon after succeeds Matthew Keany as ward boss of the North End and founds the Jefferson Club, patterned after the Hendricks Club in the West End.
