Metropolitan Sewerage Commission is established.

1889

Created by the Massachusetts legislature, it is the first metropolitan sewerage system in the U.S. The district originally includes 13 cities and 11 towns and is charged with building two systems, one for the Charles River Valley and one for the Mystic River Valley (North Metropolitan System). The commission is directed to construct a third system, the South Metropolitan, in 1899. It is merged with the Metropolitan Water Board in 1901 and the Metropolitan Park Commission in 1919.*
