Ames family household staff murder takes place.
January 11, 1888
Dennis Mulhern, a butler for the Frederick Ames family, shoots Bridget (Mary) Maguire, a waitress on the staff, in what the Boston Globe describes as a “Lovers’ Quarrel With a Probably Fatal Termination.” Although both parties involve claim that the shooting was an accident, when Maguire dies, Mulhern is charged first with assault with intent to kill and then with murder.
