Augustus Martin is elected mayor of Boston.

December 11, 1883

Martin (R and Citizens Party), with 27,494 votes, defeats Hugh O’Brien (D), with 25,950. A former Democrat and a Civil War general, Martin was born in Maine and became a shoe and leather merchant in Boston. He lives at 324 Commonwealth Avenue. His candidacy was backed by Protestant ministers who declaim from their pulpits against “rum and Romanism.” As mayor, he supports passage of a civil service law covering city employees.
