Trinity House is established.
1881
Also known as Immigrant House, it is founded by Phillips Brooks and located initially in the South End. A settlement house, it is created to provide health care and social services to arriving immigrants. The facility moves to 406 Meridian Street in 1906 and is subsequently described by Michael Price and Anthony Mitchell Sammarco as “A detention center for immigrants who were ill upon arriving. . . or whose papers were not in order. Young, single, immigrant women were required by the authorities to remain at the house until claimed by family members or their fiancés.”
