Since 1860, the city’s population has more than doubled due to the annexation of neighboring communities and immigration. Boston is now the fifth most populous of any city in the U.S. behind New York, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Chicago. 6,013 residents are described as “Colored” (including “Chinese, Japanese and civilized Indians”), including 5,873 who are African-American. Only 36% are native-born with American parents: 32% are born of foreign parents; and 32% (114,796) are foreign-born, including 64,793 from Ireland. An estimated 4,000-5,000 are Jewish. The separate town of Hyde Park has an additional population of 7,088, with 149 classified as “Colored” and 1,703 as foreign born. The population of Brighton-Allston is 6,700.
