Longwood Cricket Club is established.

April 30, 1877

Founded by a group of 25 cricket players at the suggestion of James Farley, the club is located on the former David Sears estate, Longwood, at today’s 103 Pilgrim Road. Tennis soon displaces cricket as a favorite sport, however, and a lawn tennis court is laid out in 1878, making Longwood, along with the Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club, among the oldest tennis clubs in the U.S. The first clay court is built in 1885, covered courts in 1913, and cricket is discontinued in 1915. The club purchases the Chestnut Hill Club in Brookline in 1911, but continues to use the Longwood site until it is sold to the Winsor School in 1924.
