Curley (James Michael) is born in the South End.

The son Irish immigrants Michael and Sarah (Clancy) Curley, James Michael Curley is born at 28 Northampton Street, attends the Yeoman and Dearborn Schools, leaves school at 14 , and works at various jobs before entering politics. He serves on the Boston Common Council (1900), in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1902-03), on the Board of Aldermen (1904-9), Boston City Council (1911), U.S. House of Representatives (1911-1914, 1942-46), mayor of Boston (1914-17, 1922-25), 1930-33, 1946-49), and governor of Massachusetts (1934-36). He marries Mary Herlihy in 1906, and after her death, Gertrude Dennis in 1937.* The most colorful politician in Boston history, he was called “Mayor of the Poor,” but faulted for fanning class antagonisms. Curley dies on November 12, 1958, and is buried at Old Calvary Cemetery on November 15, 1958.*
