The ceremony is held at King’s Chapel. Pallbearers include Emerson, Holmes, Longfellow, and Whittier. Sumner died at his home in Washington, D.C. on March 11, 1874. After a funeral service on March 13, 1874 in the Capitol, his body was transported by train back to Boston, where his body lay in state at the State House on March 15, 1874 and was viewed by an estimated 50,000 people. Sumner is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
