Abattoir opens.

1873

Built by the Butcher’s Slaughtering and Melting Association, it is located along Charles River from Market Street and Winship Avenue. The facility was by the Massachusetts legislature to improve public health and safety conditions. It consolidates more than 20 slaughterhouses in the area and is granted a monopoly on cattle processing within a six-mile radius of Boston. One of the slaughterhouses that moves here is owned by Gustavus Swift and becomes the largest in the U.S. before moving to Chicago. The facility continues to operate until 1956.
