Union Freight Railroad line is built.
1872
Called “the railroad that only came out at night,” it is built to haul freight only between South Station and North Station and runs along Commercial Street and the newly-built Atlantic Avenue. It has offices and a small rail yard on Atlantic Avenue, next to Commercial Wharf. The line is purchased by the Boston Redevelopment Authority in 1970, the last train runs on May 5, 1971, and the tracks are torn up during the relocation of Atlantic Avenue.
