World Peace Jubilee is held.

June 17, 1872

The 20-day festival is held in the new temporary Coliseum near today’s Copley Square and produced by Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore to celebrate the end of the Franco-Prussian war. Less successful than the Peace Jubilee produced by Sarsfield three years earlier, its highlight is the performance of Verdi’s Il Trovatore by a 20,000 member orchestra, conducted by Johann Straus and 100 assistants and accompanied by a 2,000-voice chorus.
