Holmes (Oliver Wendell) House (second) is built.

It is located at 296 Beacon Street. Holmes calls his move from Beacon Hill to the new, upscale Back Bay neighborhood as “Justifiable domicide.” He subsequently purchases the adjacent building at 294 Beacon Street and combines it with this own to create more room for his library and lives here until his death in 1894. The building is destroyed by a fire and replaced in 1951.*
