South Boston Flats filling begins.
1869
The state, first as a harbor improvement but soon a major port development project, fills the areas of today’s Fan Pier (named for the fanning out of railroad tracks on it), Seaport District, Design Center, Black Falcon Terminal, and Conley Container Terminal. Filling continued into the 1930s, ultimately creating over 600 acres of land.
