Base Ball Ticket is elected to office
December 13, 1869
The slate of candidates, who support the continued use of Boston Common for sporting events, had distributed a “base ball ballot” that includes a red baseball on the top and designates candidates for mayor and aldermen favorably disposed to continuing to allow baseball to be played on Boston Common. The issue is said to be instrumental in the election of Nathaniel Shurtleff as mayor, who grants the use of the Common for baseball the next spring.
