Black Friday occurs on Wall Street in New York City.

The subsequent Panic of 1869 ruins thousands of investors. It results from an attempt, begun a few months earlier, by stock gamblers Jim Fisk and Jay Gould to corner the gold market. The recession lasts from June 1869 until December 1870.
