Oliver Optic’s Magazine for Boys and Girls is first published.

It is founded by Dorchester resident and Boston school teacher and writer William Taylor Adams. After adopting the pen name “Oliver Optic” in 1851, he became the chief rival of Horatio Alger Jr. in the area of juvenile literature.
