Beach (Amy Cheney) is born in West Henniker, New Hampshire.

September 5, 1867

The daughter of Charles and Clara (Marcy) Beach, Amy Beach moves with her family to Boston in 1875, studies piano and composition in Boston, and, rather than study in Europe, teaches herself by studying the scores great composers. She makes her Boston debut in 1883, first performs with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1885,* and achieves her first major success as a conductor in 1892.* She marries Dr. Henry Beach in 1885, and moves to 28 Commonwealth Avenue. One of the great romantic composers of her time, she first visits Europe in 1910, returns to live in New York City in 1914, and dies there on December 27, 1944.
