Ropes & Gray law firm is established .

Founded by John Chipman Gray and John Codman Ropes, it is located initially at 20 State Street. The firm becomes Ropes, Gray & (William Caleb) Loring in 1878 and Ropes, Gray & (Robert S.) Gorham in 1899. After it becomes Ropes, Gray, Boyden & Perkins in 1914, Francis Russell later describes it as, “a law firm whose name was said to have such magic force that it was seldom mentioned; one only thought it.” It becomes Ropes, Gray, Best, Coolidge & Rugg in 1940; reverts to Ropes & Gray in 1961. Known today as Ropes & Gray LLP, it is currently located at 800 Boylston Street in the Prudential Building.
