Return of the Colors is held.

Gen. Darius Couch presents the regimental flags of every Massachusetts regiment in the Union Army to Gov. John Andrew as soldiers bearing those flags march into the State House. The flags are then draped around the pillars of Doric Hall. Since this time, it has become a tradition for every Massachusetts unit returning from war to return its flag to the governor for display in what has come to be called the Hall of Flags.
