North End Mission is established.

June 30, 1865

(June) [1867-THLW] Originally the Hanover Street Home Mission Society, it is founded by the Hanover Street Methodist Society and located initially on Hanover Street. Its purpose is to serve the poor and provide temporary refuge for what are at the time called “fallen women.” Incorporated as a school and a shelter in 1870, it moves to a former dance hall at 201 North Street in 1871, and subsequently purchases a summer home for children and year-round home for women near today’s 83 – 85 Bourne Street. The mission moves to 31 Worcester Square in 1902 and subsequently merges with the Children’s Aid Association.
