Civil War ends.

The war effectively ends when Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Some fighting continues through May, however, and President Andrew Johnson formally declares the end of the war on August 20, 1866.
