Edmonia Lewis first exhibits her sculptures.

November 11, 1864

Two works are displayed at the Colored Soldiers’ Fair. One is a bust of Col. Robert Gould Shaw. The other, since lost, is a statue of Sgt. William H. Carney, a sergeant in the Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth Regiment and the first black man to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Lewis holds her first solo exhibition in Boston in 1865.
